Mental health training for 800 pilots

Background

Virgin Airlines recognised the need for peer to peer support following the changes to EASA regulations. Their pilots and cabin crew experience long work hours, shift patterns and high levels of stress and responsibility – looking after their mental health is essential to Virgin Airlines.  They needed expert mental health first aid training, and all in a short time frame.

Solution

Virgin Airlines chose the MHFA England course as the best fit for their needs, and Red Umbrella were able to send in expert national trainers who had an understanding of the pressures of the aviation world to deliver it. Over a short period of time we were able to train up 800 pilots and cabin crew, working around their difficult schedules to ensure that their workforce was equipped to support each other.

Results

Virgin Airlines were able to meet their EASA regulation requirements for providing  peer support, and could do so without disruption to the services they provide. 800 staff were trained up in 6 months, and this helped to improve the mental wellbeing of the entire workforce, with mental health first aiders throughout every department.
